Artist Statement

As an artist, I am driven by a desire to explore the themes of light, land, performance, and ritual in my creative work. My art is a praxis, a process of engaging with and understanding the world through my artistic expression. I am inspired by the duality that exists between the femininity of our natural world and the masculinity of our human-built worlds. Through my art I explore the ways in which the technological and natural worlds can intersect and uplift each other. Which is why I strive to use light as a medium. Not only for light’s critical in all technology and biodiverse life, but also for its metaphysical significance.  While also interested in the intersection of traditional and contemporary practices, my background in performance/live art has given me a deep appreciation for the historically ritualistic aspects of the medium. Contemporary performance and ritual is incorporated into my practice as a means of honouring the land of our bodies in connection to our earth. I hope that my work inspires viewers to experience a sense of possibility and to understand that everyone has the power within themselves to find balance and bridges between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Artist Bio

Growing up, I always felt like I existed between different worlds. My last name is hyphenated, my parents are separated, and my race is mixed. My ancestors come from countries with complicated histories and divided lands. My paternal lineage is from South Korea, and my maternal lineage is from the Greek side of Cyprus. As a third culture kid raised in America, I often struggled to understand my connection to culture and felt like an outsider without a sense of belonging. This sense of isolation during my childhood and teenage years led me to seek solace in art.

Drawn to art from a young age, I decided to leave my hometown and enroll at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school for the arts. Initially, I was an Interdisciplinary major, but out of an act of intuition, I chose to transfer to the theater program. Through learning the craft of acting, I gained an emotional intelligence that I never knew I needed. I am grateful for these experiences because they taught me to acknowledge and appreciate the emotional depths of my inner world. In addition to performing, I also learned how to work behind the scenes and enjoyed tapping into my artisan skills. Studying at Idyllwild provided me with a safe and supportive environment in which to be my most authentic self.

With a desire to broaden my horizons and explore new opportunities, I applied to higher education programs outside the state and country. I was accepted into the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for a unique program called Contemporary Performance Practice. This was a vocational, avant-garde course focused on challenging traditional theater by teaching us how to devise our own live performances. During my time at the Royal Conservatoire, I received extensive training in vocal and physical theater techniques. Often I would work with my peers and learnt how to collaborate effectively in highly creative, non-hierarchical environments. In addition, I developed the skill of incorporating critical academic thought into my creative work, which helped me to deepen my understanding of contemporary art and enhance my creative process.

After relocating tothe Bay Area in 2020 and I am now currently based in San Francisco. My primary profession involves working with in the art department on film sets and designing props for theater productions. Seasonally will also work as a face painter for various special events. I am passionate about the immersive industry for its revolutionary transformation of storytelling, traditional theater, and virtual experiences. As I continue my career, I am excited to explore various roles and opportunities within this field. To keep up with industry advancements, I have begun learning new digital skills such as creative coding and 3D design. All of these experiences and efforts contribute to my growth as an artist and help me to further develop my interdisciplinary creative arts practice.
